Information
for Overseas Employment Candidates
Visas & Immigration
In order to work in Australia you will need to have the correct type of
visa. The visa classes you need to consider include a Working Holiday Visa,
Permanent Resident Visa, Temporary Business Entry (up to 3 months) or Long
Stay Temporary Business Entry (up to 4 years).
Working holiday visa
The Australian Government intends the Working Visa to be for those travelling
around the country that need to keep their finances topped up by working.
The visa limits you to work for one employer for no more than three months.
All Australian Working Holiday visa applications must be made overseas. Applicants
need to be:
- passport holders from arrangement countries*;
- aged between 18 and 30; and
- without dependent children.
Their main reason for coming to Australia should be to holiday; any work
they do should be to support themselves while they holiday.
They should have a return ticket or sufficient funds for a return or onward
fare as well as sufficient funds for the first part of their stay.
Working holiday makers are permitted a stay of 12 months from date of initial
entry to Australia regardless of whether or not they spend the whole period
in Australia. They are allowed to study or train for up to three months.
The visa gives you 12 months to travel to Australia from the date the visa
is granted. You are allowed to stay in Australia for 12 months from the date
you first enter Australia. You may work full-time, part-time or casually
for 3 months at a time with any one employer. You are not permitted to extend
your employment beyond 3 months with any employer through use of business
subsidiaries and/or subcontractors or employment agencies.
People who hold valid passports of most of these foreign countries are able
to apply for a Working Holiday visa in any country (except Australia i.e.
not when on holiday in Australia).
Applicants who hold a valid passport from Japan, the Republic of Korea,
Malta, Germany, or the HKSAR (or a British National Overseas passport) must
apply in the foreign country, which issued the passport.
* Australia has reciprocal working holiday maker arrangements with 12 countries:
Canada, the Republic of Ireland, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malta, the
Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and the
Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People's Republic
of China.
Long Stay Temporary Business Entry (up to 4 years).
In certain circumstance a company can sponsor a highly skilled migrant on
a 4-year work visa. To be eligible you must have the relevant degree and
industry work experience as deemed necessary by the Australian employer.
Pharmaceutical Professionals can assist with this process, either as the
Sponsor or as the intermediate between the client and the candidate.
The Temporary Residence category includes temporary entry for stays of up
to four years in a wide range of categories, the most substantial of which
are students, skilled employees, people establishing businesses and working
holiday makers, with smaller numbers in categories such as sportspeople,
media and film staff, entertainers, religious workers, retirees and occupational
trainees.
The Temporary Residence program also allows Australian employers to recruit
staff (usually with particular skills) from overseas.
Please be aware that temporary residents are required to pay taxes on income
earned in Australia. They do not have access to social welfare benefits or
national public health cover. (Citizens of countries with which Australia
has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements are entitled to emergency medical insurance
cover. This cover does not extend to pre-existing conditions).
Temporary Business Entry (up to 3 months)
If you need to visit Australia to conduct business - a conference, site
inspection, negotiations or perhaps an exploratory visit - there are a number
of visa options. For example:
The Business (Short Stay) visa allows the bona fide business person unlimited
travel to Australia. Visits can be up to three months and you can choose
the period of time the visa is valid up to the life of your passport or five
years, which ever is longer.
In many countries around the world you can now obtain your Business (Short
Stay) visa at the same time you purchase your airline ticket. Just ask for
a Business Electronic Travel Authority for Australia. Alternatively, you
can lodge an application by using the applications on this site .
If you are a business person from an APEC country you may be eligible for
an APEC Business Traveller Card.
